We tried this place because of The Food Network. We were here for lunch. While we got there early (around 11:30) the line was not far behind us, but this cozy place did not seem overcrowded at all. The staff was friendly, informative and patient with us out of towners as we browsed the menu. The food was great and we loved being able to try all the different sauces, even bought two to take home. The only reason we didn't give five stars was because of the cheese sauce in the nachos...it just isn't like the queso we are used to having in Texas. But overall, we all really enjoyed Whole Hog Cafe!!! Definitely recommend!!!

I'm adding a drop of water in the sea of compliments here, but obviously this place is hands down the best BBQ in LR. I may hear some aggravated sounds of defiance on that statement. Something that sounds like, "Lindsey's BBQ!" or "Sims!" or "McClards!" I'm not going to disagree and say those places aren't delicious, because they are, but to each their own. I tend to drown out all that noise, and say that I would bow down and worship Sauce #4 if I could.

Visiting Little Rock, and one thing I do wherever I am is try BBQ. So glad I chose this place over another not far away. This BBQ place is amazing! The sandwiches are all served "Southern Style", which is with coleslaw. You have to specify you don't want it. Moist and flavorful shredded chicken, along with a baked potato salad, complete with sour cream and chives. I ordered a taste of their ribs to go with the sandwich. These would make you need a minute to yourself. The 6 different house sauces, plus a super hot by request, cover just about every taste. Apparently, they are champion competition winners in the national BBQ circuit. Excellent find.

This is good bbq. I was impressed, although I ordered beef tri-tip and they gave me pulled pork. I was a bit confused. The girl at the front corrected this. I would suggest you make sure you get the right order at the counter. This place is good for large groups with a big open space and long tables. I was impressed with the different bbq sauce flavors. I definitely make a trip back here for good bbq.

Oh Maw Gawd... talk about scrumptious BBQ... big, fat, juicy, over the top, overflowing plate of yumminess... they have a variety of BBQ sauces to chose from, something for everyone. It's greatness... I left very happy and satisfied with my big fat plate of pulled pork! I went all in with a jumbo and I wasn't sorry... I was starving :)

Out of towner Texans, so we were skeptical at best. We had the small party pack for 2 adults and 4 kids. Waaay too much food! The pulled pork was moist and cooked well, the sides were amazing. The beans had chunks of pulled pork in it, heavenly. The thing that kept it from 5 stars were the ribs - somewhat overcooked and dry. Sauces were a big hit with kids, who tried them all and loudly passed judgment on them. #5 was the clear winner with them. We would definitely come back here, good job Arkansas.

Good service, good food. My only item for their improvement is that the meat didn't taste like it was smoked, more like it was prepared in an oven. It was good don't get me wrong, but would expect the meat to be smoked. I had the pulled pork

I wanted to try out their BBQ to see if the rave reviews were real or not. There a long line (about 10 people in front of me) but I was able to order within 15 mins of getting there. They are very efficient over here. On to the food. I ordered half a slab of ribs and tried out all of their secret sauces.I can't remember the name of the sauce but it was #3 on the list and it was my favorite. I will definitely visit this place again the next time I'm in town.

Ordered the Hog Plater so I could get a taste of everything. The pulled pork, ribs, beans and potato salad were all good. The beef brisket was under cooked, tough, & tasted like roast beef. Nice customer service & clean.

Half slab of ribs, slaw and potato salad--a great lunch. Especially enjoyed sauce #5!

Excellent barbecue. I'd give this place five stars if they had the traditional cornbread, french fries, and other sides that go so well with barbecue. That said, their meat is excellent - the ribs were meaty, wonderfully smoked, and their sauces are great. On top of that, their people are very friendly. Heartily recommended.

The best bang for the buck is ordering a pound of meat and sides in containers then eat there and take the rest home. For $22 you get a lot of food!!

Delicious and Cheap BBQ. I don't know why I never went here after living in LR for as long as I did. took the finace and sister here today and we did a little sampling. The fiance got the half slab platter and I added on two extra ribs for my sister and I. it was so nice and juicy and flavorful that you don't really need the sauces that they offer. I like that its not fall off the bone though but just enough. We also did the bulk meat of 1/2 lb of pulled pork, pulled chicken, and one sausage. All were delicious and its so reasonably priced. btw we got a garden salad which is $2.99 which was HUGE and really enough for 2 people to share if two people just wanted sides. Finally the variety of sauces that they are have are awesome. each are very unique tasting. my fav though is the Volcano

I was told this was the best BBQ in Arkansas... I'm not sure if it really is the best, but it was damn good! - For all you sauce lovers, they have 6 different sauces to choose from. #3 is my favorite. - BBQ, I ordered the sampler and everything was pretty good. But the pork was a little dry. As expected, the chicken and ribs were the best. - The slaw here is great! - Potato salad will have you ordering an extra side of it! I wish the sides were a little larger, but then again they are known for their meat. The price is pretty good too. Definitely a good choice with passing through LR.

This Whole Hog location is no less excellent than the others in the area: delicious pulled pork, brisket and ribs. Very affordable ($6-8 for a jumbo sandwich, $11 for a pound of pork). Very fast service: less than 10 minutes after you order at the counter your order will be ready. If you haven't tried Whole Hog, it has some of the best pulled pork in the country, and they have six different sauces that range from sweet to spicy to mustard so that every taste is satisfied.

As a non-local, I observed pretty quickly that Whole Hog Café was a staple in Little Rock and nearby areas. I swear there was one everywhere I turned. Granted, it could be the same one I kept seeing as I drove around the unfamiliar streets, but nevertheless, I'm pretty certain this restaurant is well beloved by the city. There is nothing here that will knock your socks off - unless diners or dive-y cafes are your thing - but they definitely have some darn good barbeque. I had the pulled pork and it was cooked perfectly. There are 6 different sauces - one to please just about anyone on the planet. Sweet, vinegary, spicy or thick as molasses - it's all covered. Sides were plentiful and delicious as well. It was like comfort picnic food and everything you'd expect from diner BBQ. I like to try different restaurants when I travel, but I wouldn't be opposed to having lunch here again. Very satisfying food, fair prices, and quick service. I recommend this to anyone to try.

Went in with high expectations...several locals had recommended the place and who knows better than locals neh? But my neh changed to meh. It was ok, but honestly nothing special. At least the ribs, cheese corn and beans were meh. Ribs were tasty but fell off the bone far too easily. The 5 or 6 sauces they serve on the side are kinda neat, but really just variations on a central theme. The beans were frankly not hot enough, a few too many degrees below lukewarm. And the cheese corn...well, it rather tasted like Green Giant canned nib lets in something cheese...esque. Full disclosure, I had some super fresh COTC with just butter and S&P yesterday, so a corn dish was probably suspect for me in any case. Atmosphere was strip mall chic, clean but with little else to recommend it. I will say, there was a constant stream of take out pick ups, so it must have something going for it. I guess I just couldn't see/taste it! So far, nothing better than Peg Leg Porker in Nashville!

2 words....Cheesy Corn. As if the Pulled Pork and Ribs weren't good enough topped with a choice of 6 different sauces the Cheesy Corn was one of the most incredible things ive ever had. Why haven't I thought of making this before? The smokey smell hits you in the parking lot and Whole Hog delivers taste.

After asking around for some BBQ suggestions, the name The Whole Hog Cafe came up. Wow, what do you know, it's on Markham, that's pretty close to me, hey and I'm in luck, they are open for business! So I grab my things, lick my lips and head down to THE WHOLE HOG CAFE!!! Let's begin! The smell of BBQ greets me in the parking lot and signals for me to come on in and get a taste! Much obliged, I park and walk quickly as my nose pulls me in the front door. Very clean, lots of people and the smell....sweet savory BBQ sauce, baked beans, warm rolls mixed with the noise of people chewing delicate tender meats wearing BBQ sauce as lip gloss. I grab a menu and stand firm in my place of line, as this is really about to get serious. As I glance at the menu, the waitresses continue to excuse themselves in front of me as they pass by with plates of goodness, pure BBQ goodness. I remain firm in line as I inch my way to next trying to control my nose from running off behind the waitress! YES, finally I'm next. "Hi, what can I get for you?" Ummmmmm yes, please excuse the drool, but I'd like a two meat combo with pulled chicken and beef brisket, baked beans and potato salad. "Great choice and what kind of sauce do you want with that?" Sauce.....what do you mean, sauce? Of course I want sauce lady! O, huh, you have different levels of sauce, O what, it's listed here on the menu......o, ok I didn't see that part, just give me a #3 sauce. "No problem, your order number is 66, just wait until you hear it called". So I stand aside, listening attentively as the numbers are called taking small steps to the counter as they pass 63, 64, 65! Boo-yah....66! Yup, that's me, I'm right here lady, right here in front of you, me, the one waving ticket number 66 in front of you! The bright light, you know "heavens light" shined on the white to-go box containing slow cooked, tender meats jumping up and down hoping I would open the box soon. The passing of the to-go box from her hand to mine was so sensual! As I grabbed a hold of the box, I whispered to the meats to calm down as they would "meat" my mouth soon. I quickly bag up my food and speed walk to the car. Buckle myself and my to-go plate...because this is about to be one speedy ride! The smells oozing from the box, consumes the entire car. I have no choice but to press harder on the gas! I get home, get upstairs, wash my hands and plop on the bed. As I open the box, songs of praise fill my room and my nose hairs stand at attention. As I drizzle my sweet and spicy sauce over the tender chicken and beef, the steam fogs my glasses, but that doesn't stop me! I dig my fork into half chicken half brisket and open my mouth for the emergency landing......as the chicken/beef touch the tip of my tongue, I get a tingling sensation that allowed my mouth to open even wider. As I bite down on the fork and gently remove the meat, the sauce enters my mouth like a raging waterslide! As I chew and enjoy my own BBQ lip gloss, I think of all the happy times in my life. The warm baked beans become tangled in my teeth as i gently bite down and digest, the cool potato salad made with red potatoes provided just enough coolness to unfog my glasses! And there i was, sitting and staring at an empty to-go box from The Whole Hog Cafe. I WILL return!!!!

Awesome! We are from Texas and we think the BBQ here is GOOD There are six different sauses on the table for you to help yourself. I like #1 sause (I tried all) The ribs is tasty and juicy, we added to side dishes for baked beans and potato salad. They are all very good. The staff there is friendly and recommended us the things on their menu. We can tell they are very proud of their food and care about how the customers think.

My wife's grandfather generously decided to order barbecue from Whole Hog Cafe for our Christmas Eve feast. Joy to the world!!! I've been to one Whole Hog location a few times whilst visiting Little Rock, but this would be my first sampling of the Markham Street joint. I hoped the food would be just as delicious as from our normal spot. We ended up with quite the spread: pulled pork, brisket, pulled chicken, sausage, baked beans, coleslaw, and potato salad. Too bad we didn't get any ribs, because Whole Hog smokes some awesome bones. We also had an array of sauces to compliment the meat: Sauces 1, 2, 3, and 4. The beans had some tender bits of pulled pork mixed right in, but otherwise tasted like run-of-the-mill baked beans. Visually the coleslaw looked quite nice, with plenty of black pepper throughout. It had a rather potent smell to it and a good crunch, but I'm too biased against coleslaw to comment further. The potato salad, however, was excellent. It was a mayo-based potato salad, which allowed the individual ingredients to shine much more than with mustard-based salads. This was my first go-round with chicken from Whole Hog. As I feared, it looked pretty dry from the outset, with no smokey red hue to be found. I was also expecting large pieces of pulled chicken, but instead it seemed more like we got the scrapings from the bottom of the pan. The flavor was ok, but not as good as anticipated. The pulled pork looked more visually appealing than the chicken, with at least a little bit of a smoke ring on some pieces. The meat was incredibly tender, and I definitely found some smoke here. I only wish I had received a little bark so I could taste their dry rub. Just like with the chicken, there didn't appear to be any smoke ring to the brisket either. Equally disappointing was the fact that all of the presumably delicious bark had been trimmed off. All of the slices were cut razor thin. I didn't taste much smoke, and it was a tad salty for my liking. The meat was tender, but overall wasn't very appealing. The sausage looked a little like store-bought meat and definitely hadn't been made in-house. The casings had a decent snap at least, and a good amount of pepper too. It was tasty, but not outstanding. Whole Hog Cafe has won many awards over the years (including several from Memphis in May), and is listed in Fodor's guidebooks as one of the "Don't Miss" restaurants in Arkansas. Their barbecue is pretty delicious, though I'd stick to the branch on Cantrell Road.

Great BBQ and great sides. So many bbq restaurants cop out on the sides, but not here. Good all around place.

This is Walmart heat and serve BBQ. Avoid this place! The awards mean nothing. You will wish you were more flexible to get the taste out of your mouth.

Every time I come to or through Little Rock I have to come here. The food is great. I went a different direction this time and got the chicken. Just as good. Quality meat, cooked just right! Pure awesomeness in their food and a super clean and friendly location!

    (5)
  • Myia B.

It's okay...not enough smoke on the meat. The sauces are great - lots to choose from. But, a true sign of awesome BBQ is not wanting to screw up the flavor by adding sauce. That just wasn't the case here at Whole Hog. I just didn't get the smoke I was looking for - I'm wondering if they are actually burning wood for the meat? Would I come back? Probably not.

I've been looking for another good BBQ joint in Little Rock, AR. Found some good ribs! This location is very clean and spacious. Staff was friendly and helpful. I had pork ribs (4 bones) with two sides. The Cole slaw and baked beans were very unimpressive. The Cole slaw was blend and the baked beans were merely canned Pork 'n Beans with a little sugar and BBQ sauce added. But the ribs were wonderful. Tender with very good bite, the meat pulls off the bone without falling apart. Good smoke flavor and the sauce was really good. I usually prefer my meats smoked without sauce, but this was done very well, not over powering. I'll definitely looking forward to coming back again. If the sides were a little bit better it would easily be four stars.

  • P S.

This is very good BBQ and the 6 different sauces they offer are all good. The pull pork is moist and perfect flavor. The potato salad is a special treat with a touch of ranch. Price & service are good.

  • Carroll Ann P.

Wonderful staff helped me with my choices. Pulled Pork sandwich was extra special. Moist and flavorful. Soft roll. 6 sauces to choose from ranging the taste spectrum. Slaw and Cheesy Corn. Slaw was wonderful, light mayo flavor. Cheesy Corn a bit too rich for me but flavorful! Relaxing atmosphere, too.

  • Yolanda K.

Ok, oddly enough the main reason I wanted to try this place is that there is a restaurant in the LR Airport but i've never had enough time to grab anything while going through the airport but i noticed the line is always long there. So I talked my aunt & uncle into going to one of the locations in town. The food was good, this is not why i'm giving such a low rating. I'm giving the low rating because my order was messed up twice,AND I really don't understand why BBQ restaurants won't do away with the Galley style bringing out the cups and utensils, this just feels unclean and tacky. In fact the bust boy dropped one of the cups on the floor, yuck.

  • Jennifer W.

Fantastic BBQ. The meat was so flavorful, and the sauces were awesome. We went to buy one to take home, and the cashier paid for it out of her own pocket because she learned we were visitors. Talk about great service!

  • Minny R.

It's okay. It wasn't terrible, but I wasn't enthralled either. The rack of ribs was a little tough; it didn't fall off the bone like I'd expect. The taste was mediocre. Nice and clean restaurant. Attractive ambiance. I'd give a 3.5 if I could.

    (3)
  • James H.

Can't really speak to the pricing because I didn't even look at the menu, it was catered for work.. but seirously this might have been one of the better clean delivery barbeques i've ever had. Good brisket with sauce that you add yourself. Make it into a sandwich if you wish to. I would recommend getting their tea and cookies as well!

    (4)
  • Scott K.

Fantastic BBQ at a very reasonable price. DON'T let the strip mall location fool you, this is not a wanna be BBQ joint... I have been scouting out the BBQ joints on my frequent trips to Little Rock, and think I have found my favorite so far. I did a full rack of Baby Back Ribs, and they were falling off the bone! These are NOT dry rub ribs, so if that is your thing, then it is probably best to select something different. The sauce they are finished with is slightly sweet, which I found delightful. The Potato Salad is something they are known for, but be aware it is a mayo based salad. Those who think it's not potato salad without mustard best grab the meat to go, and stop at Kroger! Give them a try, but if you are picky about the way the BBQ is prepared it is best to ask before you order.

    (5)
  • Mark H.

Good BBQ but I can't stand the mayo based potato salad. I like a good potato salad with my BBQ and I can't stand the potato salad here.

My co-workers absolutely believe this place is to die for, but I am not a huge fan. Perhaps I was getting the leftovers at office parties, so I decided to stop in their WLR location. The high points are cleanliness and friendliness of staff - Whole Hog excels in these areas and they ARE very successful in Central Arkansas, so they have to be doing something right in the eyes of their customers. I must be crazy, but they were okay at best. As far as their barbecue, it is average at best, and their beans are as generic. The ribs are pretty good, but their pork loin and beef brisket is rather dry and over-seasoned, and their sauces taste similar to Cattleman's - which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Their #3 is the best sauce, but it is pretty spicy. Also, their meat is smoked, as evidenced by a smoke ring around the perimeter, but there didn't appear to be a smoker at the location I was at - I couldn't locate a smoke stack in/around the strip-mall where this restaurant was located. I really hate to be a wet blanket, as I am generally easy to please, but they are not the best barbecue in Little Rock.

    (2)
  • Curtis H.

Had dinner here tonight and it was delicious. The brisket was moist and tasty, and the ribs were tender and the meat almost fell off the bone. They have at least 7 different sauces to choose from, and the ones I tried were unique and added great flavor to the BBQ. My only complaint was regarding the sides. The beans were slightly cold (it was almost closing time) and the roll was kind of dry and nothing special. Otherwise this place was fantastic. I would definitely come back.

    (4)
  • Celeta S.

I had pulled pork and potato salad. Loved it. The potato salad was totally different than I'm used to but it was very good to my surprise. I'm not sure I will ever go to Arkansas but if I do I'd go back. They have bbq sauce for sale. The mustard sauce is delicious! Glad I got some to take home.

  • Darin C.

The best ribs I've had in a long time. Had an overnight business trip to Little Rock last week and front desk staff at my hotel recommended this place. Great suggestion--went back the next day and got more ribs to take home. Nice selection of sauces. It you like really hot stuff try the Volcano sauce.

A lot of places get 5 stars because they are very good / excellent. Whole Hog Cafe gets 5 stars because they are the best! Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in the country. Unbelievable ribs with the #3 spicy sauce! Incredible! I'm not the guy searching the country for the best ribs, but the only place that compares is Oklahoma Joes in Kansas City, KS. But, I think the best ribs are at Whole Hog Cafe. I'm going to be hard pressed finding better. The ribs are tender, no meat sticking to the bones. The spicy sauce (#3 I think) was equally incredible. They have the hardware to prove it, winning international awards for best ribs. I also have to recognize their sweet tea, which was pretty good, and their baked beans, which were excellent. I went during the week at 11:00 when they open and there were people waiting outside to get in. By 11:30, there was a decent line waiting to order. The restaurant has nice seating with TVs showing ESPN. Tried to come back that Sunday, but they were closed. Incredible ribs!

This is an awesome BBQ place. We had the ribs, pulled pork and sausage, potato salad and BBQ beans. It's one of the BBQ's I've ever eaten at, the meat is spot on cook to perfection the sauces are great, we like # 5 & # 6 the best. If your in Little Rock don't pass this place by, it's GREAT!

Worst customer experience in a restaurant in my life!! I've been to this location multiple times before with no complaints at all. However, today I ordered my usual loaded baked potato with pulled pork and burned the &$:/ out of my mouth. The potato was so hot that the first bite completely burned not only the roof of my mouth and tongue, but also the inside of my cheek. I should also note that I kept checking the temp of the potato with my finger and even 15 minutes later it was still way to hot to eat. I brought this to the attention of the staff because I didn't want anyone else to have the same kind of experience I had. They apologized and said they would look into it and have the manager come by to talk to me. 20 minutes later the manager came out looked at me and then turned right back around. Another five minutes of waiting and I went to go talk to him. No apology, he just argued that the potatoes are at the proper temp. He did tell me that he was way to busy to speak to me because "I'm doing seven things at once". Well that was nice of him to let me know where the customer ranks on his to-do list. I guess it's somewhere around to-do #8, but that seems way to high. From his non-action and attitude I believe it to be much lower than that. The rest of the staff was very nice and pleasant. But because of him he just lost my business.

We stumbled across the Whole Hog while traveling through Little Rock on our way from San Antonio to DC. We just happened to be staying down the road and we saw the great reviews on Yelp and thought we would give it a try. Living in Texas, we were sceptical that we would find better BBQ in Arkansas, no offense to AR. Well, that was some of the best BBQ I have ever had! The brisket was lean and perfectly cooked, the BBQ chicken nachos were awesome, and the pork ribs were tender and tasty. Of all the sauces we liked #'s 2 & 3 the best. A huge thank you to Susanne H. for the incredible hospitality and the expert guidance through our Whole Hog adventure!

The potato salad is great, but the place, all in all, is overrated. Something is just a little off from greatness.

  • Tim F.

Pulled pork plate with potato salad and slaw on the side is superb...drizzle with tangy house BBQ and its heaven on earth. Also tried the half chicken with beans on the side...try it with the dark molasses BBQ sauce and its pure close-yer-eyes delish. I've gotta come back for more!

Good ribs, but they could use a little more smoke. Interesting sauces, especially No. 3. Fast service. Good enough that if I pass through Little Rock again, I intend to continue my research.

Doesn't disappoint. Great barbecue. Shared some chicken, pulled pork, and ribs with friends and it was all excellent. Moist, flavorful. Decent crowd there, but not too busy. Almost no wait to get the food and ample seating. Would be nice if they included some bread like some other places do, but no major complaints.

Great BBQ, reasonable prices, an friendly workers. I received a recommendation for this place and I am glad I took it. The place is not the standard restaurant experience with waitresses so you place your order at the counter and take it back to your seat. Ask for the volcano sauce while at the counter if you like hot sauce. It is both flavorful and hot. Every one of the BBQ sauce choices that I tried at the table was good as well. I ordered seconds of the pork when I was here as it was that good.

We were on our way to New York and passing through Little Rock late afternoon. For some reason we were in the mood for BBQ, so we found this place. It wasn't that far off our travel route on I-40. I never would have stopped at this place just driving by. It's in a strip center and looks pretty average. But, when you get your food, you know you've found a little piece of heaven. We tried a little bit of everything. The pulled pork was tender and juicy. The pork ribs were tasty, the brisket good, too. I was surprised that the thing that made the meal was the six different sauces on the table. It was like having your own little BBQ food tasting. Each sauce had a unique flavor and changed the taste of the meat. Even the sides were great. I liked the coleslaw, it wasn't overly mayonaisey, the beans had a kick and the potato salad was a welcomed kind of different. If I lived here, I would eat here often and happily.
